Ahhhhh – the great outdoors is aptly named. We’re truly fortunate to live in an area of the country that has spectacular outdoor enjoyment and recreation opportunities. Mountains, water – both inland and coast, rain and shine…opportunities abound. Just open your door and go!

One of the most refreshing outdoor beer activities I’ve been involved in for the last 3 years is a Raft & Craft trip with a well established and very well run outdoor adventure company. We head down the Wild and Scenic Rogue River for 3 days and 2 nights of fresh air, fun company, and delicious evenings. At the end of river time each day, guests off load from the rafts and happily meander to their cabins to get ready for a relaxing evening of beer and food pairings, dinner and a gorgeous twilight evening.

It’s been my pleasure to lead the beer and food pairing charge – and so it goes again this year! AND we’re adding another flavorful facet to this years’ trip: Root Beer. People of all ages and all beverage preferences can partake in the fun of learning about beer, root beer and foods they both pair nicely with. I’m learning about the herstory of root beer, as well as how to make it, because we’ll treat guest to enticing root beer edutainment each night.

We’ll be tasting root beer and matching nibbles as well as alcoholic beer and matching foods – 2 root beers + food and 2 beers + food. Both nights! The first night, guests will be entertained by the herstory of root beer: where did it come from, ingredients, how it’s made, who makes it. The second night I get to lead the group through an actual root beer making session. Fun! Of course we’ll need to all taste it to make sure it’s river worthy!

So when you think of getting outdoors, just get out. I’ll be headed to the river. Pack what you need and look forward to fresh root beer, beer, and foods to satiate a fresh air appetite. Hope to see you there!

Beer in the Outdoor tips:

  1. Pack cans – they’re lighter, more compact once empty, and are the best choice to keep the beer at it’s best.
  2. Look for lower alcohol styles. Being outdoors can easily dehydrate you – take care to go easy on any alcohol.
  3. Keep it as cool as you can. One idea: floating the beer in a cooler in a chilly body of water, stream or river.
