Analysis Reveals Significant Increase in Search Volume as Users Seek Alternatives to OpenAI’s Chatbot

During a recent outage of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, global searches for Google’s Gemini surged dramatically, reaching 327,058 on June 4th. An analysis by QR Code Generator revealed a strong correlation between the spike in searches for “Gemini” and those for “ChatGPT down.” The outage, reported early in the morning by DownDetector, prompted users to seek alternative AI chatbots, leading to a nearly 60% increase in searches for Gemini. Concurrently, searches for “Microsoft Copilot” and “ChatGPT alternative” also saw significant rises. Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator PRO S.L., noted the growing perception of Gemini as a viable alternative to ChatGPT. This data underscores Google’s efforts to position Gemini as a key player in the conversational AI market.

Global searches for Google’s Gemini skyrocketed to 327,058 on June 4th, as users sought an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT during its outage.

This surge, analyzed by QR Code Generator, correlated with increased searches for “ChatGPT down” over the same period. Both keywords trended in parallel on the morning of June 4th.

According to DownDetector, the first reports of ChatGPT’s outage surfaced just before 3 AM in New York (8 AM London time). As a result, users turned to Google for their conversational AI needs, leading to a significant rise in searches for Gemini, Google’s alternative chatbot.

Typically, “Gemini” is searched 204,991 times per day, based on average daily search volumes from May 4th to June 3rd, 2024. However, searches spiked by nearly 60% as ChatGPT went down, reaching 327,058.

In addition to “Gemini,” searches for “Microsoft Copilot” and “ChatGPT alternative” also increased during OpenAI’s absence. The usual daily searches for “Microsoft Copilot” are around 11,090, but this number rose by 50% to 16,677 on June 4th. Similarly, searches for “ChatGPT alternative” surged to 11,000 within the first few hours of June 4th, up from an average of 898 daily searches. Despite these increases, the search volumes for both keywords were significantly lower compared to those for “Gemini.”

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator PRO S.L., commented: “Google has been making incredible efforts to position itself as OpenAI’s main competitor for conversational AI, and we are witnessing clear signals of that happening today. The parallel trend between ChatGPT’s outage and Gemini’s search surge suggests that people perceive Gemini as an obvious alternative to ChatGPT. In ChatGPT’s absence, it seems clear that people turn to Gemini.”

ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has become a leading AI-powered conversational agent. Google released the Gemini chatbot at the end of 2023 as a successor to LaMDA and PaLM 2. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, claimed that Gemini Ultra outperformed GPT-4 in various text and multimodal capabilities.
