Zesty Firehouse Sloppy Joes
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce (adjust based on spice preference)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Hamburger buns
Instructions
- Brown the Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- Sauté Vegetables: Add the chopped onion, garlic, and green bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
- Prepare the Sauce: Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, and hot sauce. Reduce heat to low and simmer the mixture until thickened, about 10-15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Outdoors or potluck? Add to an already heated slow cooker.
- Heat and Brown the Buns: While the meat mixture simmers, heat a separate skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Lightly butter the inside of each hamburger bun and place them cut-side down onto the skillet. Toast until they’re golden brown and slightly crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Assemble and Serve: Spoon the beef mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Cap with the top halves and serve hot
Recommended Side Dishes:
- Crispy Sweet Potato Fries: Their sweet flavor complements the spiciness of the Sloppy Joes and adds a crunchy texture to the meal.
- Coleslaw: A classic side that offers a creamy, cooling contrast to the spicy beef, and adds a fresh crunch.
Outdoor Gatherings and Potlucks:
Zesty Firehouse Sloppy Joes are not just a treat for the family; they’re also perfect for sharing at outdoor gatherings and potlucks. Their easy prep and ability to stay flavorful even when served from a slow cooker make them ideal for events where you want to impress without too much fuss. Pair them with portable sides like chips and a simple salad, and you’ll have a complete meal that can be enjoyed under the sun or by the light of lanterns at an evening get-together.
