Sausage-Stuffed Mushrooms
Ingredients
- 20 large white or cremini mushrooms, stems removed and cleaned
- 1/2 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven:
- Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Mushrooms:
- Gently remove and discard stems. Lightly clean mushrooms with a damp paper towel. (Tip: Avoid rinsing mushrooms, as they absorb water, which can make them soggy.)
- Cook Sausage Filling:
- In a medium skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon until fully browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat, if necessary, and allow the sausage to cool slightly.
- Combine the Filling:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, softened cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, and Italian seasoning. Mix well until ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Fill the Mushrooms:
- Spoon about 1-2 teaspoons of the filling into each mushroom cap, pressing down lightly to secure the filling in place. Place the stuffed mushrooms on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender and the filling is golden brown on top.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Remove from the oven, sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired, and serve warm.
Tips & Tricks
- Use Panko Breadcrumbs: These provide an extra crunchy topping compared to traditional breadcrumbs.
- Softening Cream Cheese: If the cream cheese is too firm, microwave it in 5-second intervals until softened for easier mixing.
- Make Ahead: Prepare the filling and stuff the mushrooms a few hours before your event. Cover and refrigerate, then bake just before serving.
- For Extra Flavor: Add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes for a bit of heat or substitute the Italian seasoning with fresh thyme or rosemary for a seasonal touch.
