As we gather for the holiday season, it’s the little touches that bring warmth and elegance to the table. These Sausage-Stuffed Mushrooms, filled with savory Italian sausage, creamy cheese, and a touch of herbs, are bite-sized delights that balance the richness of the season. Simple yet sophisticated, they make a wonderful starter that’s both easy to prepare and always impressive on a holiday spread.

Sausage-Stuffed Mushrooms

Ingredients

  • 20 large white or cremini mushrooms, stems removed and cleaned
  • 1/2 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Mushrooms:
    • Gently remove and discard stems. Lightly clean mushrooms with a damp paper towel. (Tip: Avoid rinsing mushrooms, as they absorb water, which can make them soggy.)
  3. Cook Sausage Filling:
    • In a medium skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon until fully browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat, if necessary, and allow the sausage to cool slightly.
  4. Combine the Filling:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, softened cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, and Italian seasoning. Mix well until ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  5. Fill the Mushrooms:
    • Spoon about 1-2 teaspoons of the filling into each mushroom cap, pressing down lightly to secure the filling in place. Place the stuffed mushrooms on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender and the filling is golden brown on top.
  7. Garnish and Serve:
    • Remove from the oven, sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired, and serve warm.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use Panko Breadcrumbs: These provide an extra crunchy topping compared to traditional breadcrumbs.
  • Softening Cream Cheese: If the cream cheese is too firm, microwave it in 5-second intervals until softened for easier mixing.
  • Make Ahead: Prepare the filling and stuff the mushrooms a few hours before your event. Cover and refrigerate, then bake just before serving.
  • For Extra Flavor: Add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes for a bit of heat or substitute the Italian seasoning with fresh thyme or rosemary for a seasonal touch.
