The ultimate dining experience begins with great companions and is kicked up a notch or seven when it is complimented by an incredible venue and an outstanding chef. Chef Russell Lowell and his team gave us that ultimate experience with their expertise in the kitchen at the award winning Russell’s in Bothell.
At first sight the Barn lends a primitive feel, which upon entry is immediately replaced by a rustic, warm haven reminiscent of a gentleman’s library. Chef Lowell is a true outdoorsman and it shows in every available space.
Our evening began with ambrosial wine and delightful conversation. As we moved to our seats at the table we chatted with our dining companions and marveled at our setting.
A media dinner generally has a set menu and pairings. However, the rebellious Chef Lowell never follows rules and he refreshingly broke from the norm. We were able to order our desired selections from the menu for our dining pleasure. Our choices were varied and included;
- New Bedford Sea Scallops; Pan Seared with Fresh Herb Beurre Blanc
- Crab Cakes; Petite Truffled Salad with Arugula & Prosciutto
- Beef Carpaccio; Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Capers, Fresh Herbs & Parmesan Cheese
- Grilled Filet Mignon; Demi Glace, Mushroom Risotto & Seasonal Vegetables
- Pan Roasted Rack of Lamb; Whole Grain Mustard Demi Glace, Mushroom Risotto & Seasonal Vegetables
- Seared Duck Breast; Roasted Shallot Glace, Mushroom Risotto & Seasonal Vegetables
- Pan Seared Chicken Breast; Rosemary Garlic Jus, Garlic Mashed Potatoes & Seasonal Vegetables

The cuisine was beyond delicious and Chef Lowell graciously sat and dined with us, telling tales of his adventures. Listening to his stories was the highlight of the evening.
Russell has had a passion for food since he was a small boy, building his own adventures in the mangrove waterways of Cuba. He caught fish, hunted game and at 15 began cooking under the direction of a French chef in Southern California. Today, as one of the Northwest’s most celebrated and respected chef’s, he is ready to launch in to a new adventure.
Chef Lowell’s story is unique and best told by the master himself. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to hear a couple of his tales in person, and are looking forward to the release of his upcoming book in May of this year. Although it is categorized as a cookbook, it will be far more. It is filled with celebrities, adventures and is backed up with incredible photographs. Each chapter will include a recipe that pertains to the experiences of that story. I am on the edge of my seat, waiting for the debut of his written memoirs.
We enjoyed a delectable evening and I would like to thank Chef Russell Lowell and Laura Huston for a delightful dinner and great conversation. You can follow Russell’s on Facebook, visit his site and keep updated on the progress and release date of his upcoming book.
A special thank you to Mercedes Schmitt of GetDigitialMedia.com for the excellent photography. Please take a few minutes and browse through the photos of our evening with Chef Russell Lowell.
