Portland’s Heavy-Metal Themed Pizzeria Plans to Conquer Capitol Hill
Sizzle Pie is bringing its cult pizzas to Seattle. The beloved Portland pizza joint is famous for offering vegan and vegetarian pies craved by meat eaters, and salads named after Roman tyrants and hardcore punk bands. Housed in Capitol Hill’s former Auto Battery sports bar, Sizzle Pie is ready to take over the neighborhood’s craving for pizzas — morning, afternoon and night. Doors open next Thursday, April 28.
Opening at 11:00 am every day, the order-from-the counter joint offers flavors that please everybody’s taste buds, including breakfast pies that stay on the menu until close. Vegan, vegetarian, carnivore and gluten-free, all have a spot at the table! Salads, slices and 40 thin-crust whole pies are available until 3:00 am on weekdays and 4:00 am on Friday and Saturday. With playful and often musically-inspired pizza names like Wyld Stallyns, Spiral Tap, Queen, Police and Thieves, Sizzle Pie continues to honor its strong ties with the music world. Co-founders Matthew Jacobson — who launched Relapse Records in 1990 and is about to open Wayfinder Beer — and Portland artist Mikey McKennedy have built Sizzle Pie around their love for pizza and music, infusing the space, merchandise and art with heavy-metal notes. McKennedy, Orion Landau and Matt Stikker — Sizzle Pie’s metal design trio — are returning to paint the interior walls with dark murals.
Adjacent to Sizzle Pie is Dark Bar — the boozy outpost that McKennedy and Jacobson call “a dive bar that isn’t too divey.” Patrons can access it from Po Dog’s previous entrance to quench their thirst for distilled spirits and cocktails, while enjoying the outside patio. “This is our second time doing a separate bar concept with kickass pizza and music,” says director of operation, Bob Peyton. “We feature a broad selection of local distilleries as well as whiskey, bourbon, rum, cachaca, tequila, mezcal and of course craft beers.” Sizzle Pie and Dark Bar together make up a space of 3,600 square feet, with a 49 person occupancy on the restaurant side and 41 on the bar.
