Widow’s Bay Goes to the Movies

Apple TV is taking its breakout New England horror-comedy to the big screen for one night only—and the island we visited in July is proving difficult to leave behind.

Last month, we went looking for Widow’s Bay. (read our July article here!)

Not literally, of course. The wonderfully peculiar island at the center of Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay doesn’t actually exist. Instead, we followed its trail through Rockport and the Massachusetts coast, wandered north into the landscapes and atmosphere of coastal Maine, and explored the very particular storytelling DNA that makes the series feel at once familiar and completely its own.

We found traces of Jaws, Stephen King, Halloween and Twin Peaks. We found a little seaside town where everyone knows everyone, old stories are taken seriously and outsiders would be wise to listen when the locals tell them something is wrong.

We even stopped for Patricia’s Sunset Cocktails. We thought we were finished. Apparently, Widow’s Bay wasn’t finished with us.

On Wednesday, August 12, Apple TV is taking the final three episodes of the first season out of the living room and onto movie screens for a special one-night-only event at select AMC Theatres across the country.

And the tickets are free, there is, naturally, a catch. They went fast.

One Night in Widow’s Bay

The screenings are being presented by Apple TV in partnership with Rutgers University, the alma mater of series creator Katie Dippold, and will take place simultaneously at 7:30 p.m. local time in six cities:

The program includes the final three episodes of Season One, giving fans the chance to experience the end of the season together—with a theater full of people who already understand that in Widow’s Bay, an innocent town gathering can go very wrong very quickly.

It is an unusual move for a television series. The event has been reported as a first for Apple TV: bringing episodes of one of its original series into AMC theaters for a nationwide fan screening. For a show as visually cinematic as Widow’s Bay, it somehow feels appropriate.

Can You Still Get In?

Maybe. As of August 7, the official Apple TV Screenings site shows the initial allocation at all six theaters as fully claimed. Each location is now offering a Join Waitlist option.

That doesn’t necessarily mean give up. Apple’s screening system explains that when someone with a pass can no longer attend and releases it, that pass can be made available to someone on the waitlist. Those selected receive an email and must then claim an actual pass.

Being on the waitlist alone will not get you through the theater doors. For anyone hoping to make a last-minute trip to the island, the best strategy is simple: join the official waitlist and watch your email.

Confirmed passholders should also plan to arrive early. Apple’s screening guidelines recommend arriving at least an hour before the event, with seating handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

How We Got Here

When Widow’s Bay premiered on Apple TV on April 29, it arrived with an irresistible setup.

Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, is determined to rescue his struggling island community by turning it into a New England tourist destination.

There’s spotty cellular service. No Wi-Fi. The townspeople are deeply superstitious.And they insist the island is cursed, Loftis doesn’t believe them and this is, of course, a terrible mistake.

Tourists finally begin arriving, just as the old stories everyone dismissed as ridiculous begin proving considerably less ridiculous. What follows is a clever collision of genuine horror and character-driven comedy, populated by characters strange enough to be funny and human enough to care about when things start going terribly wrong.

Rhys leads an ensemble that includes Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey, with K Callan and Jeff Hiller among the supporting cast.

Dippold created and showruns the series and serves as executive producer. Hiro Murai executive produces and directed five first-season episodes, joined by directors Ti West, Sam Donovan and Andrew DeYoung.

The response has gone well beyond cult enthusiasm.

Widow’s Bay received 19 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, with nominations for Rhys, O’Flynn, Root and Dickey, as well as recognition for Dippold’s writing and Murai’s direction.

Apple renewed the series for a second season before we had much chance to miss it.

The Real Coast Behind the Fiction

And this is where we circle back to July.

Widow’s Bay may be imaginary, but much of what gives the series its weathered, slightly haunted New England character is very real.

Season One filmed across Massachusetts, including Rockport, Gloucester and Worcester.

Rockport’s unmistakable coastal character helped supply the fictional island with its sense of place, while the larger Cape Ann landscape gave the production something a soundstage simply cannot manufacture: generations of maritime history, working harbors, old buildings and an Atlantic coastline that can change personality with the weather.

Dippold intentionally left the exact location of fictional Widow’s Bay vague. We know it sits some 40 miles off the New England coast, but we’re never quite told which part of that coast.

That ambiguity was part of the fun of our July journey, Massachusetts gave us the physical Widow’s Bay, and coastal Maine helped us explore its soul.

And somewhere between the two lived that irresistible combination of fishing village, summer destination, local legend, isolation, beauty and just enough darkness to make you reconsider walking back to the inn alone after sunset.

The Island Is Still Calling

There’s something rather perfect about Widow’s Bay ending its first season this way. Mayor Loftis spends the series trying desperately to convince people to come to his strange little island.

Now Apple is inviting audiences to gather in theaters in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco to visit it together.

The first seats disappeared almost immediately. Season Two is already coming. And those of us who spent July following Widow’s Bay through New England? We may have been right about one thing, once you visit, it’s surprisingly difficult to leave.
