Zipline over the fall colors of West Virginia

Outdoor adventures in an idyllic autumn setting await

In the autumn, the mountains and forests of West Virginia come alive with spectacular colors, and the most exciting way to experience the fall foliage is ziplining through the mountains and over the gorges in southern West Virginia. As the third most forested state, West Virginia provides a lush tableau of colors that are especially vibrant for fall travelers.

Ziplining Under A Canopy of Leaves at Pipestem Adventures

Fly 300 feet in the air under a canopy of leaves, and as you zip from tree to tree you can see for a mile across the Mountain State. The cooler weather in the fall makes it the perfect time to zipline, and Pipestem offers breathtaking views as visitors sail on lines that cross over the Bluestone River Gorge three times at speeds up to 50 mph.  Nine ziplines up to 1,700 feet in length, have travelers ‘sailing’ September through the end of October, the perfect time to experience peak fall colors at Pipestem Adventures, open through October 31st.

Pipestem State Park is an adventurer’s paradise. In addition to ziplining, visitors can enjoy other adventures such as hiking, mountain biking, archery and skeet shooting  As the autumn forests explode with rich colors of red, orange, and yellow, West Virginia’s beautiful vistas engage the senses with their visual splendor, the scents of fall and the sound crunching leaves as you walk forested paths.

Among the prime destinations for leaf peeping is the state’s only National Park – the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The second week in October is the ideal time to view the colors in the most photographed and iconic sites in the state and for six weekends September through October, serious rafters from around the world visit West Virginia to take on the challenge of whitewater rafting on the Gauley River. During this distinct time of year, the dam at Summersville Lake is released, creating guaranteed flow on the Gauley River. The river consists of two distinct sections –The Upper and Lower Gauley – and each is typically run separately as a full day trip.

Travel That Matters Podcast With Bruce Wallin

The significance of “purposeful travel” and the growing importance of planning impactful, life-changing trips to dream destinations in the wake of the COVID pandemic is the focus of an exclusive interview with Preferred Hotel Group CEO Lindsey Ueberroth in the newest installment of CurtCo Media’s Travel That Matters podcast.

Celebrating the captivating and ever-changing world of luxury travel destinations and one-of-a-kind experiences, Travel That Matters features interviews with preeminent international travel experts and innovators. Hosted by Bruce Wallin, former Robb Report Editorial Director and contributor to Departures and National Geographic, the podcast invites discerning travel enthusiasts along as he delves into the world of exclusive travel experiences.

The first of three consecutive interviews with prominent women influencers from the international luxury travel sector, the discussion with Ms. Ueberroth will be followed in the weeks ahead by insightful conversations with “Ancestral Footsteps” Founder Sue Hill and All Things Italy Author Maria Shollenbarger.

Preferred Hotel Group CEO Lindsey Ueberroth

Ms. Ueberroth, whose company operates Preferred Hotels & Resorts and Beyond Green among other travel brands, tells Wallin that the COVID pandemic has profoundly impacted how travelers are now approaching their vacation planning. “Freedom of movement was taken away from us,” she explains. “The time is now, so waiting for retirement isn’t as much of a consideration. Once international travel really opens, I do think people will travel further abroad than they previously would have before the pandemic. They are seizing the opportunity after such a prolonged wait.”

Ms. Ueberroth also points to changes in regional travel planning. “We all started exploring our own backyards in our own countries or cities or states that we didn’t used to. I think that we’ve started to really appreciate and enjoy our own countries again,” she tells Mr. Wallin. “This should lead to a renaissance of that around the globe.”

Released on alternate Tuesdays, Travel That Matters is among the first in a series from CurtCo Media podcasts targeting the luxury market. Quick Bites – Enjoy the Solitude of a Table for One

Does dining solo give you the jitters? Follow these tips and master the art of eating alone.

**listen to the episode on Spotify – the link is below.

“Just one?” “Yes” I say smiling. “Please.” “No one will be joining you”? “No, but thank you for asking.”

As the world re-opens and we begin dining out more, I am prepared to answer these repeat questions. Solo dining is no longer regarded as a lonely venture. So why do people still seem surprised when we take ourselves to lunch in the afternoon or out to dinner for the evening?

If this is your year to begin dining alone, don’t be embarrassed. The number of single diners is increasing and as the world opens up again we all would really love to get out of the house. If you’re nervous, bring a smart device, a book or a book ON your smart device. Catch up on reading, the news, trending articles and simply enjoy your quiet time and space.

7 Simple Tips

  • Make a reservation.
  • If this is your first time and you feel self conscious, consider asking for a seat at the bar.
  • Stand your ground on seating if you prefer a table to the bar.
  • Don’t get stuck in your emails, enjoy the culinary experience.
  • Bring a book, magazine or notebook to jot notes.
  • Be a little adventurous and enjoy yourself.
  • Most importantly, don’t care what people think.

Solo dining while on business travel

Gone are the days of taking meals only in the room. After a day of corporate training or meetings, it’s now not uncommon to show up solo for lunch for dinner with a tablet or other smart device, as sometimes it’s the only chance during the day to catch up on emails, family or simply the news.

Slow the pace of the day – A table for one means having the opportunity to slow down, take a moment for ourselves, enjoy deliciously prepared cuisine and a spirited beverage. It forces us to unplug and simply enjoy the moment.

Be a little selfish – Enjoy yourself. Catch up on the things that make you happy, sample the menu, taste the wine and enjoy the solitude.
