A grand cocktail for the weekend is always on the menu.  The Sidecar is the most famous Pre-Prohibition drinks of the Twentieth Century and it gives me a tingle of excitement to bring a taste of history to the lips of our guests.   I would not have even considered adding this to Saturday’s docket without Shaun the Bartender’s delicious post.

Sidecar

  • 2 oz. Cognac
  • 1 oz. Cointreau
  • Juice of one Lemon
  • Granulated Sugar

Method:  In a shaker glass filled halfway with ice, pour in the measured amount of cognac and cointreau.  Squeeze in the juice of one lemon, then discard the lemon.  Cap and shake well.  Take a wedge of lemon and rim half the glass.  Dip the wet part of the rim into a saucer with granulated sugar.  Take the rind of the wedge, twist and rub on the dry portion of the rim, then drop in the rind.  Strain the contents of the mixing glass into the sugar rimmed cocktail glass.

Embury recognized this drink being invented by an American Army Captain that would frequent his favorite bistro and would be driven to and from the base by one of his enlistedmen in a motorcycle sidecar.  It has stood the test of time since.

I do recommend that you take a moment and watch Shaun concoct this little beauty right here.  Also, pop over to his site and hit the follow button.  There is a new cocktail every day for your imbibing and entertaining pleasure.
