While walking along the river I was delighted to see bright orange leaves dance through the air and land on the path in front of me. As my feet crunched through the drying leaves, I felt a familiar chill run through me. Autumn is just around the corner.
The air has a tinge of mist in the mornings and it cools quicker in the evenings. The sun still graces us with its warm rays during the heat of the afternoon and shopping malls and local shop keepers are stocking up on the back to school supplies. This is the time of year the berry fields are full of people reaping the season’s bounty and kitchens are filled with the aromas of jam cooking and fruit being prepared for canning.
The explosion of color is one of the best things about this time of year and it is an energizing time to begin planning the fall decor. After all, making your own scarecrow to grace the hay bale on the front porch can take some time. Choosing the right color of mums, coordinating containers and placing them in the perfect location with your other autumn decorating treasures can be pretty detailed task and if you are a wild decorator like me, creating a bluepring in advance is an absolute necessity.
I have a fascination with black outdoor rockers. I don’t feel the vignette for fall is complete until it is placed on the porch with the autumn hued mums. Add the hay bale, get the family together and create a brand new scarecrow for the year. Basil & Salt’s version of the perfect front porch decor.
Choosing the color of mums to accompany your new brilliant scarecrow is always the exhilarating portion. Mother Nature provides us with such a clever and colorful palette this time of year, it’s time to think about removing brights and pastels to replace them with the gorgeous deeper hues such as browns, oranges, reds, yellows and greens. Color coordinate the clothing of your scarecrow with the mums and their pots, position the rocker, throw the hay bale out (perhaps two) close to the rocker, place your new exquisite scarecrow in your rocker, standing behind or sitting on the hay, place your mums strategically on and around your porch and perhaps put out some fun and inspiring fall items. With that in place, phase I for Outdoor Fall Decorating is complete. What is Phase II? Why, Halloween of course.

“Light & Shadow” Features Sun-Soaked Sand Tones, Refined Black Metals and Unique Textural Elements
Shining a spotlight on highly textural, premium design, KitchenAid reveals its most artful appliance to date, the Limited Edition Stand Mixer, Light & Shadow. The design-forward appliance is an ode to the maker, acknowledging that their passion and creativity in the kitchen is not tied to traditional boundaries, but instead driven by inspiring moments throughout each and every day.
Light & Shadow reflects how inspiration can strike at any time, whether day or night, in big or small ways. Through the contrast of light and dark, compelling textures and exceptional styling, the sun-soaked sand tones of the Stand Mixer complement the studded shadowcasting pattern of the ceramic, tactile bowl.
“The design of Light & Shadow reflects the desire to explore and bring your vision to life,” said Jessica McConnell, director, Whirlpool Color, Finish & Material Design. “The dimensional studs on the bowl cast mesmerizing shadows that change with the sun’s rays, reflecting the possibility to make each moment feel special.”
As an appliance leader and color authority, KitchenAid releases Limited Edition appliances to display its advanced color, material and finish. The brand pushes the boundaries of what a stand mixer can do through its ability to evoke emotion and elevate lifestyles. Crafted using genuine materials with rich surface textures, the Light & Shadow Stand Mixer encourages creativity at any moment, earning a spot as a permanent fixture on countertops.
The sand-colored tonal matte mixer mirrors sand in an hourglass, while the structural, three-dimensional studded bowl reflects and subdues light. Together, the pair mark the passage of time through the marriage of light and shadow, celebrating the many different occasions that bring makers to the kitchen.
Every detail of the limited edition appliance elicits a sense of wonder and curiosity, coming to life even in the most subtle intricacies. The polish from the trimband’s deep metallic finish contrasts the sleek yet subtle hubcover, which has a two-toned finish for a shiny, satin look that mesmerizes like a mirage. Details like these set this ultra-luxe model apart from others.
“Inspiration isn’t bound by time, but rather cultivated by a series of moments,” said Jon Bellante, KitchenAid global marketing director. “Light & Shadow is a reflection of how creativity can arise in the kitchen without warning and manifest itself in the form of a brunch spread for friends, an afternoon snack or a nighttime dinner party — the possibilities are endless.”
The stand mixer is made to stand out as a centerpiece of the kitchen, blurring the line between appliance and art and allowing for a distinctive expression of individuality. Light & Shadow is available with a studded black ceramic bowl, sold exclusively with the Limited Edition Stand Mixer.
The Limited Edition Light & Shadow Stand Mixer is available for purchase on KitchenAid.com and at select retailers, complete with unique packaging, for MSRP $449.99 (Stainless Steel Bowl option) and $549.99 (Studded Bowl option).

New data from the brand reveals 73% of respondents with a combined household income of $150K or more want to remodel their homes for guests as the country returns to normalcy
The House of Rohl®, a portfolio of luxury plumbing brands, today announced new insights highlighting the 2021 trends that are here to stay and what’s next in the world of home renovation and kitchen and bath design. The new research comes at a time when many Americans are returning to normal routines and re-opening their homes up to family and friends.
While this past year saw people spending more time at home than ever before and utilizing their spaces in multiple ways, House of Rohl unveiled a continued interest in home renovations, in particular kitchens and baths. More than one in three (36%) respondents plan to update their kitchen or bathroom(s) this year or early next year, while 44% with a combined household income of at least $150K plan to update one of these rooms.
New key insights further detail three overarching trends that depict how the past year has transformed the way in which consumers are viewing, using and renovating their homes in the months ahead:
Both Home Entertaining and Relaxation are Key Drivers
Americans are excited to welcome people back into their homes, which is driving the continued interest in renovations. In fact, half of respondents want to renovate their homes with guest entertaining in mind, which can take the form of revamped outdoor spaces, additional seating areas and upgraded furniture. This number increases to 73% for respondents with a combined household income of at least $150K.
At the same time, the return to normal routines is also driving the need for a sanctuary, with 70% of respondents wanting their homes to feel like a calming retreat from the busy world. One way respondents look to further inspire relaxation within the home is through the bathroom – half want their bathrooms to feel like a personal spa.
“We know that many people took time to update their personal spaces while at home this past year, and this new data allows us to further shed light onto the importance of the home sanctuary,” said Eveline Simard, principal industrial designer for House of Rohl. “While we look forward to gatherings, we still want to return to that escape. This is true even in the bathroom. At House of Rohl, we craft exquisite collections with relaxation in mind. From our iconic Victoria + Albert® freestanding tubs to our newly released Reflet™ Bath Collection from Riobel®, which was designed to mimic the movement of water, our products effectively create the spa environment at home.”
Homeowners Are Willing to Invest in an Elevated Experience
Not only do Americans want to renovate their homes for guests, but 57% of respondents also agreed that spending more time at home has shown them the value of an elevated home experience. Because of this, 1 in 2 said they have identified areas for home improvement, and 47% are willing to spend more money on home renovation than they would have in the past to achieve a lavish home environment.
“As consumers spent time indoors, they have experienced firsthand the importance of the home and are now willing to transform their space to reflect a need for a more stylized residence,” said Simard. “The motivation to renovate in this manner, and with a higher budget, likely means we will be seeing consumers choose higher quality materials, enlist the help of an interior designer or opt for luxury brands.”
A Lasting Impact on Style
The tumultuous times of the last year have had a lasting impact on style preferences, with a few key microtrends here to stay as many continue to update their homes:
Personalized Style: A majority (58%) of respondents agree that more recently, they want their kitchen and bathrooms to showcase their personal style, and 63% are more likely to select bathroom fixtures if they can personalize them.
Soothing Colors: Nearly two thirds (61%) of respondents agree that they want to bring more warm and relaxing colors into their spaces to help inspire relaxation.
Biophilic Approach to Design: To further strengthen the connection to nature in their homes, nearly half (45%) of respondents stated that they have prioritized bringing outdoor elements into their home spaces.
Chic Sanitization: Fifty-three percent would consider purchasing motion-activated or hands-free faucet options to help reduce the spread of germs, which highlights consumer need for health and wellness properties. This increases to more than three-quarters (76%) for respondents with a combined household income of at least $150K.
Methodology House of Rohl conducted its interior design survey between May 25 – May 28, 2021, with a sample of 1,016 U.S. respondents.
About House of Rohl. The House of Rohl is a portfolio of luxury decorative plumbing brands curated from around the world: Riobel®, Perrin & Rowe®, Shaws®, Victoria + Albert® and ROHL®. Each has a unique story that connects craft, place of origin and specialized techniques that deliver timeless design. Project Manager, Sara Magno and Bruno Pinto, Digital Creator
1. Tell us about the beginning of your journey in the design world? How did the love for design emerge?
Ever since I was young, I’ve loved visiting museums, studying art history and I will begin painting soon. I have designed my own clothes, and when I began traveling solo, I would visit different cultures to understand the architecture and the interior spaces of each country which are so different and well adapted. The colors, textures, landscapes, always fascinated me and in these past five years, while working I have developed my skills in these different areas of design; editorial, graphic, product, and now interior spaces.
2. Why DelightFULL and Essential Home?
Two amazing brands that embrace my work and allow me to grow up with them! In the past 5 years, I traveled the world with a different vision thankfully to DelightFULL and Essential Home. Understanding the customer needs, the space integration, the product trends, new textiles, materials, functionally with comfort, crafting everything hand by hand carefully for each piece be unique – a life statement that I’m addicted to, creating everything with time, passion, and worldwide renown in the end.
3. We know that the mid-century modern style is usually associated with bright color palettes and combinations, but for you what is the essence of this unique design approach?
DelightFULL and Essential Home preserves the references of design between the ’40s to ’80s, the forms, the materials, the atmosphere reinterpreted for nowadays. For me, this essence is when we finish a project or room, and we feel it like ours, we feel it that we lived there, a Deja Vu. Recreating a space history with our products keeps memories in people’s heart, this is our unique design approach, create pieces that allow souls to feel alive with their past references.
4. Talking about one of your most recent projects, the beautiful minimalistic virtual house project called “MILLION DOLLAR MODERN APARTMENT IN NEW YORK”, what was the main message you were trying to pass with this design?
We understand that we need to expose a different vision of mid-century modern style reinterpreted again, keeping with calm tones, creating a bright space that gives customers the feeling of a familiar home. DelightFULL lamps are juice and fun and we try to keep this one the junior room, but also give them a classic touch in the rest of the house, keeping the white, the nickels allow these lamps to fit any different era, more “straight” (Laughs). Essential Home products are colorful and feminine, reinterpreted in this house with pastel tones, white and grey shades, they seem more clear with allowing us to create a house where the products can camouflage with the walls, with the floor, being there waiting for the family to use them and to embrace each room.
5. Creating a unique house project in the virtual world can be quite challenging? What were the biggest obstacles that you and your team had to face?
Yes, very challenging. Working virtually requires an aesthetic vision for each detail, carefully adapted for any screen, trying to be real. In real projects, we visit the place, we feel the rooms, we select the textures and colors feeling them, and mix them in the space This was our biggest obstacle, create an ambiance with colors, textures, and lighting that feels more real as possible.
6. What are the biggest focal points when designing this luxurious home design?
The biggest focal points are that in each room all the pieces combine between them, all the shapes carefully adapted to their place and in the end, the final atmosphere brings that sense of calm and serenity. We study each product and position to create this sense of harmony and space living.
7. Want to give us a little tour through the house?
(Laughs) Yes! Let’s go! Starting for the entryway we keep it simple for the family to get in and feel the serenity inside that they can’t feel outside in NY streets with noise and different cultures. The kitchen, dining room, and living room, are an open space to experience this family area and promote more relations. When we get inside the private rooms, like the bedrooms, one of them was created for a junior boy that needs to keep dreaming and playing, so we integrate different products and we create a DelightFULL graphic wall lamp to be fun and young. When we step into the master bedroom with a feminine touch, but most importantly, we feel that it is private, comfortable, intimated, that was our goal again, create the most realistic experience in a virtual house where any family can feel that is theirs home.
8. What is your favorite part of the entire process of design?
My favorite part of the process of the design is the mood boards! I love to create them, understand the harmony between each piece, select colors and materials, and it was quite a challenge to do it just for a virtual experience!
9. Were you trying to incorporate any popular design trends in interior design?
Of course! The first trend for this year is Abstract Minimalism. Since the pandemic started, people need to feel protected in their homes and calming colors and lights are perfect to vibrate this theme. We also try to concentrate on compositions sometimes, with radial symmetry in some decor and art that we used.
10. How would you and your team describe this fabulous project in three words?
Fresh, Familiar, and Minimalism.
11. Do you think that these virtual house projects are going to be a new impact on the design world?
I have no doubts about that. Designers are living in a new era where traveling is different, be in the office, in showrooms, selecting materials and textiles in stores, visit design fairs! Everything changed, we need to keep with our work in virtual meetings, give virtual advice, so for me it is natural that we grow up with the virtual experience with our professionals keeping virtually reinterpreting the experiences to keep inspirations and design alive.
12. What are going to be the next BIG steps for DelightFULL and Essential Home? Can you tell us more about your expectations for the future?
Well, we have many surprises coming this year! Related to virtual houses, we are creating an interior designers network that in partnership with us will create these virtual houses signed by them projected with our products. I can give you a name, Masquespacio designers very very soon will launch a virtual project with us! As for product design, we are also creating more capsule collections as we created in the past year with Studiopepe and Carlo Donati, worldwide designers like Karim Rashid from NYC! This designer’s network with DelightFULL and Essential Home will create a new way to explore the design world and the relations between design cultures.

Your front porch and flower garden are the first things your guests see when they arrive. Make sure they are gorgeous!
I don’t have a lot of space in my backyard, which limits my gardening to containers. As I began working on my patio garden blueprint, I headed outdoors to take stock of my garden containers. I needed to weed out the old, dead plants and check for cracks or breakage of my pots after our freezing northwest winter weather.
My back patio was in a deplorable state. Moss and general “grunginess” had taken over my herb and floral containers. It’s not something I probably would have spent too much time worrying over, but the hard freezes this year and taken a toll on a couple of my terra cotta’s, so I headed out to Lowe’s to purchase new ones. When I returned home with them and set them beside my seasoned pots, the contrast was too noticeable to walk away from. Cleaner, rags and a hose in hand, I went to work.
Earlier this year Mean Green had asked me to be one of the ambassadors for their brand. I had not previously tried the product and they sent me an assortment to test. The patio furniture sat out in the snow and was covered in a light green layer of dirt and moss. Every accessory, container, planter and piece of garden and patio furniture received a scrubbing and we are ready for barbecue activity. I love this product and it made my backyard patio garden gorgeous again.
Spring cleaning generally seems to be an indoor activity. While we tackle windows, cabinets and clean out dusty closets, our outdoors needs a good scrubbing as well to get ready for backyard cookout activities and evening cocktails on the front porch. While I was out checking my pots, I had also noticed my front and back doors were loaded with dirt. They received a good scrubbing as well.
Additional things to consider while cleaning the outdoors for spring and summer:
Clean out last year’s growth from the flower beds and turn over the dirt. Even if you aren’t ready to plant, this freshens up the yard.
Containers are a great way to add spots of color and are easy to move around the yard as needed. Set in cut florals or plant flowers already in bloom for instant beauty.
More ideas below!
Please Note: We did receive product and yes, this is a sponsored post written by Karie Engels. While we do publish posts that are sponsored, this site will not ever represent or write about a product we do not believe in and we proudly represent Mean Green as one of their product Ambassadors.
