Kentucky Bourbon Festival 2017

September 2017 by Michael Pendley

Bonfire19September is Bourbon Heritage Month. To celebrate, the city of Bardstown, KY throws a week-long, bourbon centric party for the entire world. Last year’s Kentucky Bourbon Festival saw approximately 53,000 attendees hailing from 44 States and 14 different countries descend on the small, central KY community for a week of bourbon games, bonfires, food, bourbon tastings, seminars from bourbon experts, and cocktail parties.

Why Bardstown? Because the area truly is the Bourbon Capital of the World. The community of Bardstown has been making bourbon since 1776. Today, 69% of the world’s bourbon is distilled in Nelson and the adjacent counties. Expand that range out a few more counties, and you get a staggering 95% of the bourbon produced on earth.

This year’s Festival runs September 11-17. Sponsors include Barton 1792 Distillery, Buffalo Trace Distillery, Four Roses Distillery, Heaven Hill Distilleries Inc., Beam, Maker’s Mark Distillery, Rebel Yell, Wild Turkey Distillery, and Woodford Reserve Distillery plus the Independent Stave Company and the Kentucky Distillers’ Association. Additional major sponsors include Bulleit Bourbon, Blanton’s and Michter’s.

Boots85Full events list and ticket costs can be found at kybourbonfestival.com and include live Music on the Lawn Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. till midnight and Sunday from 1 p.m. till 4 p.m. Ticket costs vary by event, and range from free to $185 per ticket.

This year’s seminars include talks from The Moonshine University on The Science of Maturation. During this session, they will take a look at how whiskey matures within the barrel it calls home.  Barrels have additive, subtractive and interactive properties, each will impact the whiskey in different ways. The seminar will explain what each action does and how the barrel, and where it is stored, will affect what is happening to the spirit inside.  Instruction includes analysis of barrel pulls and how each individual barrel imparts its own unique flavor. (Thursday, September 14th from 10a.m-12 noon)

Gala030Moonshine University will also present the “A Whiskey and Its Grains” in which they will host an in-depth class that examines how each individual grain can greatly affect the spirit that comes off the still.  They will examine corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley, the four grains that make up on 99% of whiskeys, and how each grain adds its own specific flavors and aromas to whiskey. Learn the nuances of each grain and how it will impact the final product. They will also cover the fast-growing trend of using alternative grains and how those will change the whiskeys that we know and love. Instruction includes a thorough analysis of each individual grain distillate, as well as the production process of milling, cooking, fermentation, and distillation. (Friday, September 15th from 10a.m-12 noon)

The Bottled in Bond Fire is always a must tend event. This year’s will be held at Wickland, Home of Three Governors from 7 – 11 pm on Saturday the 16th. Kick back and cozy up to the bonfires as you enjoy Bottled in Bond Bourbon while host Susan Reigler, Executive Bourbon Steward and President of the Bourbon Women Association discusses the nuances of Bottled in Bond Bourbons.

For classic car buffs, the Whiskey City Cruisers, the area’s largest club, will hold a car show at Bardstown City Hall on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The event is free to the public and always features some outstanding custom automobiles.

Since you can’t have bourbon without barrels, the coopers from Independent Stave Company will demonstrate the historic craft of making special oak barrels for aging Bourbon. The event will be held at Spalding Hall Lawn on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. This event is also free to the public.

Gala033As you would expect from a Bourbon Festival, cocktail parties abound at the event. Events like the Sip & Savor in the Spirit of Old Kentucky, The Great KY Bourbon Tasting & Gala, Boots and Bourbon, and the Bourbon, Cigars & Jazz offer something for everyone.

If you get thirsty, be sure to stop by the Spirit Garden to sip a Kentucky Bourbon cocktail, such as the Petal Pusher, the Official Cocktail of the 2017 Kentucky Bourbon Festival. A variety of Kentucky Bourbons and cocktails will be available for purchase. Beer will also be available for purchase. Pick up a drink and head over to the Food Court to sample the wares of numerous food venders from around the area.

While you might not think of a Bourbon Festival as a family event, there is always entertainment for attendees of all ages. A Family Fun Area will feature a variety of interactive games, inflatables, train rides and more for family enjoyment. The Hot Air Balloon Glow will light up the night sky with the glowing colors of numerous balloons. Arts, crafts and Kentucky Proud booths will be scattered throughout the downtown area. A four-person golf scramble will be held on Saturday at the nearby Bardstown Country Club at Maywood course.

If you are a fan of bourbon, or even just a fan of a good time, head on down to the Kentucky Bourbon Festival and enjoy the events.

Touring Festival Launches September 16 In Tacoma, WA
With Stops In Boise, ID, Concord, CA, Sacramento, CA & Huntington Beach, CA

Stone Brewing To Release Small Batch Stone & NOFX Punk in Drublic Hoppy Lager Exclusively In Festival Markets

Created from the mind and liver of NOFX‘s frontman Fat Mike, the Punk In Drublic Craft Beer & Music Festival will debut in the Western U.S. this fall with five special events featuring the best in punk rock music and regional craft beer.

Named for NOFX‘s classic Punk In Drublic album, which has sold over one million copies, Punk In Drublic Craft Beer & Music Festival launches September 16 in Tacoma, WA, with stops in Boise, IDConcord, CASacramento, CA, and Huntington Beach, CANOFX will co-headline each date of Punk In Drublic Craft Beer & Music Festival alongside Flogging Molly in some markets and Bad Religion in others, and every show will also feature four other bands. Look for full details to be announced in August at www.PunkInDrublicFest.com.

Each Punk In Drublic festival date will feature up to four hours of craft beer tastings with over 100 craft beers, including some of the West Coast’s best and local favorites. Craft beer tastings are included with admission. Festival hours will be Noon—9:00 PM.

Fat Mike has joined forces with premier music event producer/promoter Synergy Global Entertainment and respected craft beer event production powerhouse Brew Ha Ha Productions for the festival. In addition, to celebrate Punk In DrublicFat Mike teamed up with craft beer pioneers Stone Brewing to brew their very own Stone & NOFX Punk in Drublic Hoppy Lager, which will be available in cans only in the festival markets. This collaboration is a huge show of support by Stone, as it marks the first time ever that Stone has worked with a musician for a can release. They’ve even included the festival tour dates on the back of each can. This is a first-of-its-kind level of commitment from a brewery partner for a festival tour.

Stone Brewing & NOFX Punk in Drublic Hoppy Lager can

When asked how Stone & NOFX Punk in Drublic Hoppy Lager tastes, Fat Mike says, “It’s something to wash the noise away.” However, other slogans offered by Mike that were quickly turned down by Stone included, “It’s the beer of champagnes” and finally, “They say you can’t get beer from a stone…oh shit, we just did!”

“We know we’re crazy for letting Fat Mike in our brewery, but we’re doing it anyway,” says Greg KochStone Brewing co-founder. “We have a lot in common in not only refusing to follow the status quo, but actively rejecting it. I have incredible respect for what he and Fat Wreck Chords have done for the independent music scene. Craft beer is currently in a similar open-your-eyes-to-the-man’s-corporate-obfuscation battle. Is independent craft beer punk rock? Very. And even more so now with this collab. See you in the pit!”

Cameron Collins, Co-Founder & Director of Events at Brew Ha Ha Productions explains, “Craft beer and punk rock are cut from the same cloth. Small, independent, and up against some big challenges: taking on BIG BEER, and local bands determined to do it their way, despite what might make them a quick buck. Punk In Drublic throws off the mantle of the ordinary to create an event unlike any other…a perfect pairing of craft beer and punk rock!”

Fun run and Mountain Bike ride in Mercer’s vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills to be held May 20, 2017

Mercer Estates Winery and Survivor Champion, Ethan Zhon have joined forces to create this inaugural event – The Eagle and Plow Race –  5K fun run and 15K/30K Mountain Bike ride in Mercer’s vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills to be held May 20, 2017.

Both groups donate all of the proceeds from the day to causes near to them – the Semper Fi Fund and Grassroots Soccer.

ethan zoneThe event includes a 5k run around Mercer’s Eagle and Plow Vineyard and/or a 15K/30k Mountain Bike ride around several vineyard lots on some very exciting terrain.  The first race will kick off at 10 am.  Prizes will be awarded to top finishers, biggest group, best dressed or themed among others.  After the race Mercer Estates is holding a late lunch at the winery in Prosser.  Ethan will also be selling tickets to be the lucky guests to watch his Survivor Africa Reel later that night at the Mercer Tasting Room.

The idea was spearheaded by Rachel Mercer (Mercer Tasting Room Manager) and Ethan Zhon (former American professional soccer player and reality TV contestant who won $1,000,000 on Survivor: Africa) after Ethan chose to serve Mercer Wines at his wedding.  The two discussed their mutual passion for philanthropy and helping to make the world a better place.  Ethan offered his celebrity and Mercer offered a venue, and The Eagle & Plow Race came to life.

Ethan invested most of his Survivor winnings to co-found the organization, Grassroot Soccer which uses the power of soccer and the energy of youth to educate, inspire and mobilize communities to improve health. Ethan has been an important force in driving the strategic direction of GRS and building partnerships that have helped to provide lifesaving education for more than 1.9 million young people in 50 different countries.

Rob Mercer, owner of Mercer Estates Winery founded the Eagle & Plow charitable project 3 years ago with long-time friend, John Derrick.  Derrick lost his best friend on Flight 93 in 2001 and Rob served a tour with the USMC in Iraq.  Eagle & Plow gives 100% of the proceeds raised from its’ BLOCK 93 vineyard to organizations supporting our service men, women and their families.  Over the past 3 vintages, the project has donated approximately $70,000 in cash and wine donations to this deserving audience.

This is the first race the Mercers have held out in the vineyards, which are located about 25 miles south of Prosser WA in the heart of the Horse Heaven Hills wine AVA.  The plateau is mostly flat with some canyons allowing for some terrain and gentle slopes.   The mountain bike trail has been under development for over a year and is two laps of an approximate nine mile course.  “There are hills, sand, gravel, mud, rocks and dirt – it is the perfect mountain bike course”, says avid mountain biker Rob Mercer.  The 5K Fun Run will wind through the North portion of the Eagle and Plow vineyard on established dirt roads and trails.  May is traditionally a very calm and relatively warm month – so we are hoping for a great race day!

The races will start and end at the entrance to the vineyard.  Prizes for the races will be awarded in the vineyard by Mercer and Zohn.  The race is supported by volunteers from Mercer Ranches and Mercer Estates, local school and running groups, and area Marines.  After the race, everyone is invited back to the Mercer Estates Tasting room for a celebration lunch, mingling with Ethan Zohn, wine tasting, yard games and much more.  A limited number of tickets will be sold at the event to attend “The Survivor Africa Reel” with Ethan Zohn at 7pm on the big screen in the Mercer Barrel Room.

Pricing for the races including race t-shirt, swag bag, race entry and lunch:  Youth $30 and  Adults $50.  A limited number of “Survivor Reel” tickets will be available online and through the tasting room.

To sign up for the race as an individual or a team go to SignMeUp.com/EPRace.  Race forms will also be available at VeloCity Bike Shop on Keene Road in Richland.  You can email info@MercerEstates.com  or call (509) 786-2097 for race registration forms.

“We hope to raise awareness and a lot of money for these two growing and important initiatives and have a heck of a lot of fun along the way”, says Rob Mercer.  “Come run, ride or be an enthusiastic supporter”.

A fresh bouquet of beautiful, locally grown flowers from the Market and a personalized Market Charm make perfect gifts for Mother’s Day

flower festivalPike Place Market presents the 8th annual Flower Festival on Mother’s Day weekend on May 7-8, 2016. The festival features fresh, locally grown flower arrangements from more than 40 farmers of King, Snohomish and Whatcom Counties.

In the early morning hours, tents will be set up on either side of the cobblestone street of Pike Place to showcase the farmers’ abundant bouquets of tulips, daffodils, irises and peonies. Browse the tents and watch the farmers carefully arrange the flowers, pick up a bouquet or two, and enjoy shopping and dining at the Market.

Also present this year is the Pike Place Market Foundation tent, which will offer another gift option: a Market Charm engraved with mom’s name. Proceeds support the MarketFront expansion and will help provide opportunities for local shops, farmers, and artists, as well as housing and services for seniors and low-income neighbors.
